Consultations on Syria in Geneva to be based on Moscow meetings’ results - UN envoy

2015/04/24

UNITED NATIONS, April 25. /TASS/. Consultations on Syria that will start in Geneva in early May will be based on the results of the dialogue in Moscow, United Nations Special Envoy on Syria Staffan de Mistura said Friday.

De Mistura said he believes consultations in Russia were very much useful and added that their experience will be used in the future.

There were two rounds of the intra-Syrian dialogue in Moscow - in January and in early April. The so-called "Moscow Platform" was adopted following the latest consultations - a document that in particular stipulates peaceful solution to the Syrian conflict on the basis of the principles of the Geneva Communique of June 30, 2012.

According to UN statistics, fighting between Syrian government troops and militants has killed more than 200,000 people and displaced millions since its start in 2011.

An international peace conference on Syria, dubbed Geneva-2, organized by Russia and the United States and designed to negotiate a solution to the Syrian crisis, held in January and February 2014, brought no particular progress.

The Geneva Communique was adopted on June 30, 2012 at a conference of an "action group" on Syria in Geneva. That conference is now commonly referred to as "Geneva-1.".
