2015/04/10

KIEV, April 10. /TASS/. The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) on Friday launched a process of completing its activity during which all the power units will be conserved, the NPP website said on Friday.

"The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine has issued a separate permission for implementing works under the Program of the stage of final closing and conservation," the statement says.

This means that the Chernobyl NPP is "completing its activity on decommissioning and is officially switching to a phase of withdrawal from service," it reads.

The process of the final closing and conservation of power units of the Chernobyl NPP will last until 2028.

In April 1986, Ukraine witnessed the world's worst nuclear disaster when an explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant released radiation, which spread over the western part of the Soviet Union and Europe.
