2016 F1 Russia GP may be held in nighttime — promoter

2015/04/08

MOSCOW, April 8. /TASS/. The 2016 Formula One Grand Prix Russia at the racing track in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi may be held in the nighttime, Sergey Vorobyov, the head of the Russian F1 racing promotion company Sochi AutoDrom, said on Wednesday.

"The idea to hold a night race still exists," he said. "This will happen sooner or later."

"This will certainly happen by 2020. But theoretically the Russian Grand Prix may take place in the nighttime already in 2016," the promoter said.

This year’s Formula One Grand Prix Russia in Sochi will be held again in the daytime on October 11.

Last year Vorobyov suggested that in the future years the Sochi GP would turn into a night race, similar to Singapore and Abu-Dhabi GPs. The same idea was expressed by F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone, when he first visited Sochi for the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games last year, and said the city’s infrastructure and sports facilities built for the Games looked great lit up in the night time.

The sale of tickets will start on April 9.
