The University of South Carolina’s New School of Public Health was placed on lockdown Thursday afternoon after shots were reportedly fired.
A message posted to the school’s official website at 1:16 p.m. local time on Thursday said shots had been fired and students and faculty should seek shelter and await further instructions.

“All University of South Carolina buildings are on lockdown,” The State, a local paper, reported soon after, and school buildings were reportedly being evacuated despite calls to shelter in place.

“Seek safe shelter,” the university said in an emergency alert. “Remain indoors. Obey officials.”
The New School of Public Health is located on the college’s Columbia, SC campus.
