MOSCOW, October 14 (RIA Novosti) – A massive pile up of 40 vehicles took place Monday on the M4 “Don” federal highway in the Krasnodar territory; as a result two were killed and eight injured, reported Russian news agency Gazeta.
In the aftermath of the collision, the police had to close down an entire section of the highway. The route was partially opened later in the afternoon.
The reason for the accident is said to be heavy fog and driver negligence. The first accident occurred when 19 vehicles slammed into each other after failing to keep a safe distance during bad weather conditions. Soon after, another accident took place two kilometers away from the original spot, involving several more cars and two trucks, Gazeta said.
Two people were killed and eight injured, four of them seriously, the Krasnodar police department said.
“In recent days, temperature in the area at night time has been low, however it rises up to 26 degrees during days”, said an official of the press service at the Krasnodar police department, as quoted by Gazeta. “Thus, the heavy fog has formed”.
Meanwhile, the head of the Krasnodar territory, Alexander Tkachev, has urged drivers to be careful, especially when driving in bad-weather conditions. Tkachev has also promised to bring more doctors from Krasnodar, the territory’s capital, to assist the victims, Gazeta reported.
