MOSCOW, September 26 (RIA Novosti) – The lower chamber of the Russian parliament, the State Duma, has ratified the treaty on Eurasian Economic Union, signed by the presidents of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan in May.
The treaty was ratified almost unanimously, with 441 “yes” votes and one abstention. No one voted against it.
The treaty, signed between the leaders of Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia on May 29, 2014, establishes an economic union between the three countries starting from January 1, 2015.
The EAU will create a single economic market, with the potential to become a new powerful center of economic development.
The republics of Armenia, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have also expressed interest in joining the organization.
