Russian Air Forces Complete Large-Scale Redeployment in Combat Readiness Drills

2014/09/15

MOSCOW, September 16 (RIA Novosti) – Air defense units from Russia’s Eastern Military District, encompassing Siberia and the Far East, have completed a large-scale redeployment during snap combat readiness drills, the Defense Ministry's press service said Tuesday.

“The forces relocated to operational areas and ready for exercises,” the ministry said.

In total, some 100 planes and helicopters were relocated at distances of 400 to 4,000 kilometers (248 to 2,485 miles).

The drills in Russia's Eastern Military District began September 11 following an order from President Vladimir Putin. The military exercises saw some 100,000 troops taking part.

In August, an unannounced inspection of the district forces' combat readiness took place and was successful. Its coastal troops carried out vehicle deployments and practiced air and harbor defense during a coastal defense simulation.

The same month, personnel responsible for drone operations practiced their operating skills and planned flight routes above the coast and mainland of Russia's far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula.
