Official: Russian Scientists Say West Restricts Publications

2014/09/18

ARKHANGELSK, September 18 (RIA Novosti) - Russian scientists whose articles have been frequently published in western science magazines are concerned that their publications in the West may now be restricted, Alexander Bedritsky, a special presidential representative on climate issues, told RIA Novosti Thursday.

"Officially, the West has not imposed sanctions restricting scientific publications from Russia. However, Russian academic bodies and institutions that are regularly published in the West now feel like that," Bedritsky said.

The representative also noted that some foreign scientists and scholars openly refuse to attend international meetings held in Russia.

"Russia loses nothing in this situation. It is those who reject the opportunity to exchange experience that lose," he said, adding that there are people willing to boost these negative trends in international relations.

Russian relations with the West have deteriorated over the crisis in Ukraine. The European Union and the United States have been imposing sanctions on Russia over its alleged involvement in the crisis, which Moscow has repeatedly denied.

The sanctions have targeted Russian banks, oil and defense companies, as well as certain individuals. There have been no announcements of sanctions imposed on scientific cooperation and research.
