MOSCOW, September 7 (RIA Novosti) - Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has congratulated the workers of the oil and gas industry with their professional holiday, stressing that it is important to strengthen the country’s energy security in the light of a complex international situation, the website of the Cabinet stated Sunday.

"In today's complicated international situation, it is important to keep the leading position of our oil and gas industry in the global market; to continue consistently implement long-term projects aimed at strengthening Russia’s energy security," Medvedev said.

The prime minister said that priority should be given to the introduction of innovative exploration and drilling technologies that meet the most stringent environmental requirements. In addition, it is necessary to actively develop new deposits of hydrocarbons, including the continental shelf.

Medvedev also reminded that the oil and gas industry is the backbone of the Russian economy. It ensures social stability of the regions, where the mining and processing enterprises are located, and the regions, where oil and gas pipelines are laid.
