MOSCOW, September 2 (RIA Novosti) - Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has congratulated Turkey’s newly-elected Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on his appointment to the post, noting that Russia is ready to build a cooperative relationship with Turkey, in a letter quoted by Medvedev’s press service on Tuesday.

“Russia and Turkey are tied by long-term partner relations. I am sure that further strengthening of cooperation in the trade and economic, investment, scientific, technical, cultural, and other spheres fully meets the interests of both countries. I am ready for active joint work aimed at building multi-faceted bilateral cooperation,” Medvedev said.

Turkey held its first ever direct presidential elections on August 10. Previously the leadership had been appointed by parliament ever since the establishment of Turkey as a republic in 1923. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan won the election securing 52 percent of the votes.

On August 28, Ahmet Davutoglu, Turkey’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs, was elected as the country’s new prime minister.
