MOSCOW, September 5 (RIA Novosti) - Committee of Permanent Representatives in the European Union (COPERER) is to continue discussions on new proposed package of EU sanctions against Russia on Friday, a source close to the EU officials, who wished to remain undisclosed told RIA Novosti.
“It is going to continue on Friday,” the agency’s interlocutor said when responding to the question on whether there is any news from COPERER consultations.
Relations between Russia and the West have deteriorated due to the situation in Ukraine.
Over the past few months, the West kept unjustifiably accusing Russia of building up forces on its border with eastern Ukraine and supplying independence supporters with weapons, a claim that Moscow has rejected.
In late July, the European Union and the United States proceeded from individual sanctions, imposed on a number of people and companies to penalties on whole sectors of the Russian economy.
Russia was pushed to introduce protective measures in response and limited food imports from countries that imposed sanctions on it.
On August 30, at the EU Summit in Brussels, European leaders urged the European Commission to create proposals for new economic sanctions against Russia within one week.
Earlier today, US Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes said that US President Barack Obama and leaders of several European countries agreed that more sanctions should be imposed on Russia.
Moscow has repeatedly called the language of sanctions “counterproductive,” saying the measures “threaten international peace and stability” and run counter to the principles of international law.
