2014/09/15

MOSCOW, September 15 (RIA Novosti) - At the moment almost 57,000 Ukrainian refugees are in temporary camps in Russia, an intra-departmental Emergency Operation Center representative told RIA Novosti.

"At the moment there are 1,008 temporary settlements with 56,480 people in them," the representative said.

Working educational and cultural institutions, sanatoriums, recreation camps and sports venues usually become temporary accommodation facilities. Railway carriages are also often used for accommodation. The number of people a temporary settlement may house depends on the scale of emergency and varies from 50 to several thousand beds.

The flow of refugees from southeastern Ukraine has increased significantly since June amid continuous fighting between pro-independence militants and Ukrainian security officials. Rostov Region has seen a major influx of Ukrainian refugees, with more than 50,000 being accommodated there. According to the Russian Federal Migration Service, about 820,000 Ukrainian citizens have entered Russia since April 1.
