Son of Russia’s Lawmaker Seleznev Not Transferred into General Regime

WASHINGTON, August 26 (RIA Novosti) - The administration of the detention facility where Roman Seleznev, accused of hacking by the US government, remains in custody did not transfer the Russian citizen from the special unit into the general regime, Andrei Yushmanov, Consul General of the Russian Federation said.

"On Friday afternoon, the consul visited Seleznev. He feels more or less alright, but regime conditions have not changed," Yushmanov told RIA Novosti Monday.

According to the Consul General, the Russian citizen is held in the special unit of the detention facility.

At the last court hearing the lawyers raised the question of transferring Seleznev into the general regime, so that he could have an opportunity for daily walks and access to the phone.

Roman Seleznev, the son of a Russian State Duma lawmaker Valery Seleznev, was detained on July 5 at an airport in the Maldives and flown to the US island of Guam. Seleznev’s defense asked for his release, saying that the Russian citizen was illegally detained outside US jurisdiction.

Seleznev faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of bank fraud, while the other charges also carry significant sentences.

The Russian Foreign Ministry called the incident an unfriendly move by the United States and a de facto kidnapping, while the government of the Maldives promised to review the legal framework leading up to Seleznev’s arrest.
