MOSCOW, June 9 (RIA Novosti) – The recent meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko was absolutely confidential, the two concentrated on the bloodshed in eastern Ukraine, Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday.

“The meeting was short but confidential. But let me repeat once again, the conversation was absolutely confidential. First [the two presidents] discussed the situation in the country’s east, this bloodshed,” the Russian News Service quoted Peskov as saying.

Putin and Poroshenko met June 6 in the French town of Deauville on the sidelines of ceremonies marking the 70th anniversary of the Allied landings in Normandy during WWII.

During their brief talks, the Russian leader welcomed the intention of his Ukrainian counterpart to end the violent punitive operation against independence supporters in eastern Ukraine.

Violence in eastern Ukrainian regions has been on the rise since the beginning of a special operation launched by Kiev authorities in mid-April to crack down on protesters.

The operation, repeatedly condemned by Russia, has claimed dozens of civilian victims.
