NOVOSIBIRSK, June 6 (RIA Novosti) – GLONASS receivers are to be produced in Russia, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said on Friday.
"It so happens that [GLONASS signal-reception] chipsets are all made outside Russia. That is, we own the orbital groups, we provide the signal for free, but we install these chipsets, buying them from foreign companies first. This is nonsense," Rogozin said.
To this end, the deputy prime minister has signed a decree, according to which all GLONASS chipsets and modules are to be made in Russia.
The GLONASS network, which began its operation in 1993, provides real-time positioning and speed data for surface, sea and airborne objects. The first overseas ground station was launched in Brazil in February 2013. Russia’s full-scale plan for GLONASS is to build 50 stations in several dozen countries across the globe.
