Sanctions Against Russia Drive Ukraine Crisis to Dead End – Moscow

2014/04/29

MOSCOW, April 29 (RIA Novosti) - The new sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union on Russia will negatively impact the situation in Ukraine, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gregory Karasin told RIA Novosti Tuesday.

"This is absolutely a counterproductive pattern measure that drives the critical situation in Ukraine to a dead end. Instead of that, it is necessary to make collective efforts and influence Kiev's authorities to start a real dialogue with the Ukrainian regions and stop all sorts of military and special operations against their own people," Karasin said.

On Monday, the United States imposed sanctions, including asset freezes and visa bans, against 7 Russian individuals and 17 Russian companies linked to Russian President Vladimir Putin's inner circle.

The European Union followed the US move on Tuesday, announcing sanctions on 15 additional Russian and Ukrainian officials. Most of those listed in the EU sanctions expand on the US list.

Moscow has repeatedly warned that talking in the language of sanctions is "inappropriate and counterproductive" and warned its Western partners about the "boomerang effect" that sanctions would have.

Ukraine underwent a regime change resembling a military coup on February 22. The country's parliament ousted President Viktor Yanukovych, changed the constitution and scheduled an early presidential election for May 25.
