MOSCOW, April 7 (RIA Novosti) – Crimean security forces repelled an attack by a gang of hooligans on a military checkpoint and barracks in western Crimea late on Sunday, the Crimean Interior Ministry told reporters Monday.
According to an Interior Ministry spokesperson, a duty officer from a military unit stationed on the outskirts of the town of Saki informed police about ten people approaching a checkpoint at around midnight on Sunday.
“The hooligans hurled stones and smashed windows. A local police patrol was deployed to crack down on the violators,” the spokesperson said, adding that the criminals fled the scene after the police and garrison patrols arrived.
“Ten minutes later the unit’s duty officer was informed that a number of unidentified people had broken into the garrison barracks 100 meters from the checkpoint. The police and military patrol headed for the barracks to inspect the scene,” the Crimean Interior Ministry said.
He specified that five drunken men attacked the police and the military patrol officers, attempting to seize their weapons.
“One attacker was detained and another one fatally wounded. Three assailants managed to escape,” he added.
One military patrol officer suffered a concussion after being hit on the temple with a blunt object. He was given medical attention at the scene.
