Did You Know That Sevastopol Stands On the Ruins of an Ancient City?

2014/03/27

Chersonesos Taurica is a city founded by ancient Greek settlers over 2,5 thousand years ago in the south-west area of Crimea. Today its ruins attract tourists who come to the biggest city of Crimea – Sevastopol.

The area of the ruins is huge – 45 hectares. But it was not this big in the very beginning.

Its territory grew almost twice by the first centuries AD.

The houses of Chersonesos stood tightly, the streets were rather narrow.

City blocks had approximately an equal size and were decussate.

Over two thousand of years Chersonesos changed its architectural appearance repeatedly: wars, fires, population growth, change of beliefs were impacting the city.

Shabby and burnt structures were demolished to leave space for new construction, the city had a lot of ruins and demolition waste.
