Ani is an ancient Armenian city but today it is located on the territory of Turkey. Founded over 1600 years ago it became the capital of the Armenian Kingdom of Ani. In the eleventh century it was populated by more than 100 thousand people. In the following centuries handreds of times it was invaded by Byzantine emperors, Ottomans, nomadic Kurds, Armenians, Georgians… By the 1300s Ani was devastated and fully abandoned by the 1700s. In 2010 the Global Heritage Fund identified Ani as one of 12 worldwide sites most “On the Verge”.
