MOSCOW, January 20 (RIA Novosti) – A militant was killed Monday during a clash with security forces in the capital of Russia’s republic of Dagestan, just as some parts of the city were placed on lockdown.
“A fighter inside a household was eliminated during clashes. Operations are ongoing,” a law enforcement source told RIA Novosti.
A source said a number of buildings in Makhachkala in which militants were believed to have taken shelter had been barricaded.
Seven militants were killed in a shootout with law enforcement on Saturday in Makhachkala, one day after a grenade and car bomb attack on a restaurant wounded at least five people.
International officials have expressed concern over violence from the troubled region affecting the upcoming Sochi Winter Games.
