Police Officer Killed in Shootout in Russia’s Dagestan

2013/12/13

MOSCOW, December 13 (RIA Novosti) – One police officer was killed and another wounded in a shootout Thursday night with militants in Russia’s southern republic of Dagestan, a local law enforcement source told RIA Novosti.

The source said that one militant was wounded but managed to escape from the clash, which took place in the village of Tlibisho. It was not immediately clear how many suspected militants were involved in the incident.

A lockdown imposed during counter-terrorist operations was put in place at midnight on Thursday in the district where the incident took place, though it was not immediately clear whether it was implemented before or after the shootout.

Attacks against law enforcement and security personnel are frequent in the North Caucasus. An Islamic insurgency movement has been ongoing in Dagestan as well as in neighboring Chechnya, which has seen a series of separatist conflicts over the past two decades.
