Moscow Police Seize Rats, Roosters ‘Likely Used for Gambling’

2013/12/03

MOSCOW, December 3 (RIA Novosti) – Police said Tuesday that they found cages containing roosters, rats and insects that they said were likely used for gambling during a raid on a bookmaker in Moscow.

Officers made the find while searching the basement of the bookie’s office on the central Novy Arbat Street on November 20, Moscow police said in a statement.

Eight computers containing information on illegal gambling were also seized.

The establishment raided was not named in the police statement.

Major restrictions on the casino industry introduced by the government in 2009 has led to a proliferation of underground gambling outlets.

One former casino on Novy Arbat, Korona, was converted into a bookmaker after the casino restrictions were implemented and was as of October hosting underground rat races and cockfights, according to a report by The Moscow News.

It was unclear Tuesday if Korona was the establishment targeted in last month’s raid.

A telephone number listed online for Korona was disconnected when called for comment.
