Emergency Ministry in Russia to Cut Staff in Efficiency Drive

2013/11/28

MOSCOW, November 28 (RIA Novosti) – Thousands of senior emergency workers in Russia will lose their jobs over the next two years as part of announced large-scale efficiency cuts.

The Emergency Situations Ministry will shed 16.5 percent of senior firefighter positions and 9.5 percent of its senior military posts by the start of 2016, according to a report posted on the ministry website.

Emergency Situations Minister Vladimir Puchkov said in July that the ministry would implement a reduction plan approved by President Vladimir Putin. He said cuts would mostly affect managerial staff.

Military rescue units, which currently comprise about 7,200 officers, were created within the Emergency Situations Minister following a 2011 decree by then-President Dmitry Medvedev.

The state fire service, which also falls under the ministry’s auspices, employs about 55,000 personnel.

The Finance Ministry announced similar sweeping cuts to the Defense Ministry in September, saying it would reduce costs by at least 1.2 billion rubles ($36 million) next year by eliminating superfluous departments.

Cuts to government spending reflect increasingly conservative growth estimates for the economy in Russia in the coming few years.
