2 Homemade Bombs Found in Russia’s Tatarstan

2013/11/18

MOSCOW, November 18 (RIA Novosti) – Two homemade bombs were discovered and defused over the weekend in the republic of Tatarstan in central Russia, local authorities reported Monday.

The bombs were found Saturday in the city of Nizhnekamsk, the Investigative Committee said in a statement.

An investigation is under way, but no suspects have yet been identified.

Tatarstan has a large Muslim population, but it is far from Russia’s North Caucasus, where local authorities are subject to almost daily attacks in a low-level insurgency by Islamist groups.

The authorities have been on high alert for terrorist activity after a bus was bombed in the southern city of Volgograd last month.

Anxieties are running particularly high amid terror threats made against the Winter Olympics, which is to be held in Sochi in February.
