KEMEROVO, October 22 (RIA Novosti) – A Russian man is facing a murder trial on charges he beat his neighbor to death for refusing to buy him cigarettes, investigators said Tuesday.

The incident occurred in June this year when the 27-year-old suspect, who was drunk, demanded his 30-year-old neighbor buy him cigarettes of a certain brand, according to local investigators in the Kemerovo Region. The neighbor refused, and the two of them had a quarrel.

The suspect allegedly beat his neighbor unconsciousness and drove him in the trunk of a car to a timber dump, where he inflicted several fatal blows to the victim, investigators said in a statement.

He later tried to burn the body, but was soon detained by the law enforcement authorities, the statement said.

Investigators said the victim was suffering from a mental disorder and had a history of alcohol abuse.

The accused faces up to 15 years in prison if found guilty of murder.
