Public Should Consider Divorce Tax Raise - PM Medvedev

2013/09/23

MOSCOW, September 24 (RIA Novosti) - A legislative initiative to sharply raise the state duty on divorce should be put to public consideration, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has said.

“We need to see all pros and cons,” Medvedev said Monday at a meeting with top senators after some of them proposed increasing the “divorce tax” to some 30,000 rubles ($943) from the current 400 rubles ($13).

“It seems to me it can’t be carried out by a government resolution or a Federation Council [upper house of parliament] initiative,” he said.

“We need to discuss the issue, we have expert sites, including Open Government,” Medvedev said, adding the motives behind the initiative were clear: to make those about to marry think twice before tying the knot.
