MOSCOW, September 8 (RIA Novosti) – Supporters of Russian protest leader Alexei Navalny will hold a rally in downtown Moscow on Monday, the city's acting top security official Alexei Mayorov said.

The rally will he held on Bolotnaya Square, a day after Moscow’s mayoral race where Acting Mayor Sergei Sobyanin faces off against Navalny.

Attendance is capped at 2,500, the official said.

The Moscow Mayor’s Office has also sanctioned a rally in Moscow’s Novopushkinsky Garden to be held by the Russian Communist Party, Mayorov said adding that up to 1,000 people will be allowed to attend the event.

Moscow's Bolotnaya Square was the scene of an anti-government demonstration last May that turned violent. Over 400 people were arrested and scores were injured when protesters briefly broke through police lines in a bid to take their protest to the Kremlin walls.
