Moscow Diplomatically Denies Reported Saudi Deal on Syria

2013/09/09

MOSCOW, September 9 (RIA Novosti) – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov indirectly denied Monday that Moscow was considering a secret deal on Syria with Saudi Arabia, a vehement enemy of the Syrian regime.

“There can be no deals behind the back of the Syrian people in terms of the policies espoused by Russia,” Lavrov said when asked about the reported Saudi arrangement at a press conference following his meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem.

Unconfirmed media reports claimed in August that Riyadh had offered Moscow arms deals worth $15 billion and guarantees of safety from Islamist attacks during the upcoming 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi in exchange for Russia not blocking an international military operation against the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
