MOSCOW, August 3 (RIA Novosti) – Russian lawmakers said Saturday that the provocative US rockers Bloodhound Gang whose bass player desecrated a Russian flag should be punished "harshly."
During Bloodhound Gang's performance in the Ukrainian port of Odessa on Wednesday, the band’s bassist Jared Hasselhoff shoved the flag inside his pants and literally wiped his behind with it, according to a video posted on YouTube. He told the audience “not to tell [President Vladimir] Putin about it,” according to the video.
Another YouTube clip showed the band’s front-man Jimmy Pop shouting cursing Russia to the excitement of raging Ukrainian fans during a Tuesday concert in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.
Ilya Kostunov, Russian lawmaker with the United Russia party called on law enforcement agencies to come up with “a principally harsh response,” according to a statement posted on the party’s website.
Another lawmaker, Ruslan Gattarov, said Saturday that the band should be barred from entering Russia.
The video with the flag desecration infuriated many Russian online users who took the musicians’ acts as personal offense to their national pride.
The band later apologized for the flag incident, Russian media reported, but their attempts to make amendments with the Russian authorities did not seem to work.
“For such pranks they should be behind bars,” Krasnodar region governor Alexander Tkachyov said in a tweet on Saturday. “And, by the way, let them use their apology as a wipe.”
Bloodhound Gang is known for their provocative songs such as "Kiss Me Where It Smells Funny" and "You're Pretty When I'm Drunk."
