Russian Court Drops Case Against Businesswoman Who Died 3 Years Ago

2013/08/06

MOSCOW, August 6 (RIA Novosti) – A Moscow court on Tuesday closed a fraud case against a Russian businesswoman who died in a Moscow jail three years ago, media reports said.

The case was reportedly closed at the request of relatives of the businesswoman, Vera Trifonova, who had died at the age of 53 after suffering from acute diabetes. In May, charges were dropped against a doctor who had treated Trifonova in a pretrial detention facility, because the statute of limitation had run out.

The jail deaths of white-collar crime suspects Trifonova and whistle-blowing lawyer Sergei Magnitsky sparked public outcry. Last year, the United States passed legislation to punish Russian officials implicated in the prosecution of Magnitsky, who was jailed after accusing officials of tax evasion.
