2013/08/24

MOSCOW, August 25 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian Interior Ministry said on Saturday it would deploy about 56,500 police, troops and security personnel in Moscow during the September 8 mayor elections.

“More than 32,000 police officers, 4,500 troops, 6,000 private security guards and 14,000 members of volunteer public security squads are to be involved in maintaining security in Moscow on September 7 and 8,” the minsitry said in a statement.

The announcement followed unconfirmed media reports of a rally being prepared in Moscow shortly after the polls. An anonymous Interior Ministry source said a Moscow mayor candidate, whose name was not revealed, was preparing an unauthorized protest to contest the election results.
