Newborn Baby Found Alive in Trash Can in Russia’s North

2013/08/25

SYKTYVKAR, August 25 (RIA Novosti) – Police in Russia's northern republic of Komi are investigating the discovery of a newborn found alive in a trash can, a police spokesman said Sunday.

The baby boy, hidden in a plastic bag, was discovered screaming inside the garbage can in a residential area in Syktyvkar, the republic’s capital, on Saturday, the spokesman said.

The newborn has been taken to a local hospital by emergency crews. A search for the mother who apparently abandoned the baby is ongoing.

A similar incident was reported on Tuesday when the body of a newborn baby girl showing signs of a violent death was found in a trash can in a park in Russia’s northern city of Arkhangelsk.

In November 2011, Russian officials announced plans to install “baby boxes” that new mothers can use to anonymously and safely drop off unwanted newborns.

The Change One Life charity says that baby boxes have been installed in 11 Russian cities as of December 2011.
