Arms Cache Found in North Caucasus

2013/08/03

NALCHIK, August 3 (RIA Novosti) - Police have found a cache with arms and ammunition in Russia’s North Caucasus republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, the republic’s Interior Ministry said Saturday.

The cache, including an F-1 hand grenade, a fully loaded magazine from a Kalashnikov assault rifle and 46 rounds of ammunition, was discovered on an abandoned farm in the city of Terek, the ministry said.

It did not say when the cache was found.

Earlier in the day the Interior Ministry of Russia’s North Caucasus republic of Dagestan said one police officer was killed and three injured in an attack as they tried to stop a passing car at a checkpoint near the village of Pervomaiskoye.

The Islamist insurgency, once confined largely to the republic of Chechnya, has spread across the North Caucasus in recent years. Attacks on security forces, police and civilians are reported regularly in the neighboring republics of Dagestan, Ingushetia and Kabardino-Balkaria.
