Investigators Probe Train Crash in S. Russia

2013/07/08

KRASNODAR, July 8 (RIA Novosti) - A criminal probe has been opened into a train crash in southern Russia in which a passenger train ran off the rails injuring 25 people, the Investigative Committee said on Monday.

Fifteen people including five children had to be hospitalized after eleven train cars derailed, five of which overturned in Krasnodar Region’s Krylovsky district on Sunday. There were 618 people on board, the committee said in a statement.

A criminal case has been opened on charges of violation of safety rules resulting in human injury and damage to property, the Investigative Committee said.

Investigators are considering several possible causes for the accident, with technical failure the most likely factor, the committee said, adding a terrorist attack has been ruled out. A team of investigators is currently working at the scene, the committee said.

The Health Ministry’s local branch said earlier on Monday all the 15 people hospitalized were in satisfactory condition.

An official earlier cited the locomotive’s engineer as saying the summer heat might have warped the tracks, causing the derailment. A high of 33 degrees Celsius (90 Fahrenheit) was reported for the area that day.
