Russian Legislators Seek Three Marriages Limit

2013/06/27

MOSCOW, June 27 (RIA Novosti) - Russians will be limited to a maximum three legal marriages under a bill to be introduced in the lower house of the Russian parliament, Gazeta.ru said on Thursday.

The bill, drafted by Yevgeny Mazepin, a public figure in the central Russian city of Voronezh, is to be submitted to the State Duma by members of the Family, Women and Children Affairs Committee headed by Yelena Mizulina.

“The draft amendments to the [Family] Code aim to help form a more serious attitude to the family and marriage in society and reduce the number of divorces,” Mazepin said.

Under the bill, fourth and subsequent marriages will only be allowed if registered in a court of law and for well-founded reasons.

Russia has the 15th highest female divorce rate and 28th highest for men out of 160 countries in a recent UN survey.
