MINSK, January 23 (RIA Novosti) - Belarusian policemen have arrested a Russian national traveling from Poland who rammed through a border checkpoint in a stolen vehicle, the Belarus Customs Committee said on Wednesday.

On Monday, a 23-year-old man in a BMW accelerated through the checkpoint and drove straight into Belarus after being stopped at customs. He was found and arrested in a nearby village on Tuesday.

“The car, which had a German license plate, was called to one side at the Polish border as the accompanying paperwork aroused suspicion. As it turns out, the car had been stolen in Germany,” Alexander Tishchenko, a spokesman for the Belarus Customs Committee, said.

The Russian has said that, after living in Germany for 15 years, he was suddenly “gripped by homesickness, and all he could do was steal a car and drive it to Russia,” Tishchenko added.

The man is currently in custody in Belarus, where he faces charges of violating a national border.
