MOSCOW, December 6 (RIA Novosti) – Thousands of apartments built for the Defense Ministry remain empty because they are in regions where noone wants to live, Russian Chamber of Accounts head Sergei Stepashin said on Thursday.
While 100,000 soldiers remain on the housing waiting list, around 60,000 apartments remain unclaimed, he told journalists. He added that many don't want to "deal with" the regions and the localities to which they've been assigned.
Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu is currently looking into the situation, he said.
Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov said earlier this week that 48,000 apartments were provided for servicemen in 2012, adding everyone on the waiting list should get housing by the end of 2013.
