Ruins of a Once Prosperous Plant

2012/12/05

This tungsten-molybdenum plant gave life to the city of Tyrnyauz of Kabardino-Balkaria on the last year of WWII. But so long ago it totally became bankrupt. The government promises to restore it but you will see that there is already nothing to restore there. Those ruins can only be demolished to build a new plant.

The main building of the plant was last reconstructed in 1983.

This used to be a football field.

Cows walk nearby.

Some strange pipes can be seen.

Nobody guards the place.

The ground level rose for some meters due to the ruins.

The shops used to look like this.

Today they look this way.

All the metal has already been taken away.

Even concrete floors were taken away.

In 2008 the buildings were still solid.

But in 2012…

Remains of the piping are being disassembled right in front of you.

Another object of the plant is a swingarm ropeway which connected the city with the mines at the height. Some years ago it looked like this.

And if you come here today…

Here used to be counterweights.

No ropeway is here anymore…

Another station looks the same.

There is a mountain lake not far from Tyrnyauz. “How beautiful! It would be great to bathe there!” – you may think. But we do not advise you to do this. It is an artificial lake where waste waters from the plant were flowing into for dozens of years.

Location: Tyrnyauz, Kabardino-Balkaria
