Russian Civil Satellite Links Lost After Cable Cut

2012/11/14

MOSCOW, November 14 (RIA Novosti) - A severed communications cable in the Moscow region on Wednesday has rendered Russian specialists unable to control most of the country's civilian satellites, including the Russian segment of the International Space Station, a source in the space industry said.

“Communications have been lost between civilian ground-based tracking, command and control stations,” the source told RIA Novosti.

“Specialists can see the ISS crew and can talk to them but are unable to send commands to the Russian segment.”

The emergency has not affected communications with the Russian military satellites as they use their own communications channels, he added.

A Defense Ministry source confirmed to RIA Novosti that military satellites had not been affected.

It will take at least 48 hours to fix the problem, the source said.
