The secret Nazi base in the Arctic

2016/10/30

Remember, we talked about one of the most mysterious companies of Nazi Germany, and most recently the whole world was thundered with sensation: Russian Arctic researchers found a secret Nazi base, abandoned by them during the Second World War.

On the Earth of Alexandra Island of Franz Josef Land archipelago, preserved ruins of bunkers, documents, and other artifacts.

During the research of this godforsaken island, which is within the territorial borders of Russia, scientists have found more than 500 items, including bunker ruins, items of personal use, thrown out gasoline cans and even paper documents that were surprisingly well preserved in cold climates.

Geolocation of Alexandra Island

It is believed that in 1942 there was built a meteorological station. The base was working not for a long time - only two years, they made over 700 synoptic weather reports. In July 1944, it was abandoned after the entire staff was ill, and half of the people died.

There were shortages of supplies and people ate the half-baked meat of polar bear, infected with roundworms, and they were eventually infected with trichinosis.

Survivors were picked up from the base by a German submarine. Now, 72 years later, the remains of the secret base were re-opened and now you can see on video forgotten artifacts of wartime.

Right under the feet, ammunition half-frozen into the ice, fragments of tents and personal items, such as shoes. On most items, there is a release date, and they are marked with the swastika.

The mysterious place was also known as Schatzgraber or "Kladoiskatel”. Eugeniy Yermolov, a senior research associate at the National Park "Russian Arctic", said: "Before this information about this base was known only from written sources, and many considered it as a fiction. However, now we have real evidence. "

Chukotka, the remains of the former greatness

2016/10/30

During our July trip to Chukotka, we visited a very interesting object, reminiscent about the past greatness of the country, which was called USSR. These are remains of the "Yukon" station, one of 46 tropospheric stations of the "North" tropospheric radio relay link. The line had a length of 13,200 kilometers, and provided connection between distant regions of the country.

The object is easily accessible, except the fact that it is situated on Chukotka. You can walk to it from Anadyr, but it's tedious, so it is better to use motor vehicles. We came here with the staff of the Russian Emergencies Ministry, thank them very much for this. After the military went away from here there was an attempt to create a ski base there, but something went wrong, but maybe there is just not so many skiers in Anadyr.

Just a few years ago station looked like this. Giant "mattresses" were visible for many kilometers, and the locals relied on them when they were on the way home after traveling in the Chuckchee tundra. But things have changed.

Now this place looks much sadder, "mattresses" were dismantled, some metal was stolen for construction of beams. We walk through the area in silence.

8 Frightening Facts about the Nuclear Arsenal of Russia (9 photos)

2016/10/27

Albert Einstein once said: "I do not know what weapons will be carried out in the World War III, but in the fourth would be used rocks!". And looking at the current situation in the world, you begin to believe in it more and more. Here are some facts about the country's nuclear arsenal, which prove that a nuclear war of mankind is not exactly necessary.

Across the network:

In Russia, there is the largest number of nuclear warheads in the world

Now, according to estimates by the international expert groups, which were made on the basis of reports in the within the exchange of the SOA-III data, Russia has 508 deployed strategic delivery vehicles. There is a total of 1,796 nuclear weapons. The nearest competitor - the United States – has got 1367 warheads on 681 vehicles. I should make a clarification that according to the same SOA-III, each deployed bomber counts as one nuclear warhead. But how many nuclear bombs and missiles at the same time it carries on itself - it is not considered.

In fact, there are much more nuclear units

The current number of active, deployed nuclear warheads regulated by SOA-III, under which they each country should have less than 1500. Both the US and Russia are close to this number. However, apart from nuclear units standing on duty, there is also a back-up, non-deployed warheads, including those which are in long-term storage. They need to be destroyed according to the contract, but no one is in a hurry to do this. According to various estimates, there are around 6800"canned" warheads in Russia, while the United States have about 7600 pieces.

Compared with the arms of the USSR it is still just a little

Disappearing city in Georgia Which Has a Creepy Network of Old Cable Cars

2016/10/27

The small town, modestly lost in the mountain vastness of Georgia, impressed the imagination of the traveler, photographer and founder of TEG Bureau - Pavel Makarov, that he spent a few days there, riding on the city's main attractions - the cableway. Chiatura – town of miners, located on two sides of the canyon, which contains dozens of active and broken funiculars, built in the 1950s

Ghost Town is literally permeated with the spirit of the Soviet era, dilapidated houses and a sense of hopelessness. But once, in Soviet times, it had a great future - for the extraction of huge reserves of ore and manganese. Time goes and everybody forgot this city...

The key attraction of the city - manganese mines, which are located throughout the neighborhood of Chiatura. Anyone who came here can watch the manganese extraction process.

Autumn colors of Yakut taiga from a helicopter

2016/10/26

In late September it was necessary to fly from Anadyr to Mirny. The fastest way is via Moscow. I flew 9:00 to Moscow. There I had 6 hours to get from Vnukovo to Domodedovo and then 5 hours back. There is no other way. It is possible to go through Yakutsk and Khabarovsk, but the flights are not every day, and the aircrafts are smaller and more dependent on the weather, so it is faster and more reliable – through  Moscow.

I had to go not in Mirny, but to its field 270 kilometers away. You can get there only by helicopter. Fly takes hour and forty minutes in each direction. I did not spend this time in vain, I admired the beauty of the taiga in autumn. Under this description there are 33 most striking photos of 800 that were made ...

2016/10/25

Surf Siberia - a project about the people in the vast expanses of our country, the project is about surfing in Russia, that the opportunity exists everywhere and in everything, you must only have a will and a belief in light endeavors. Founders of the project open new places that nobody knows and want to show everyone that we also have waves - and to let them taste the life of a surfer, there is no need to go to the warmer climes.

1 Inspirer and Founder of the project Konstantin Kokorev together with friends travels to different parts of the country in search of the best waves.

2 This project was just an idea for a long time it was impossible to do it, but gradually a group of people who were willing to do this was formed.

3 The first episode was filmed on the Kamchatka in the winter and became a test of strength because the conditions were really difficult.
