Russia in 1851 as Seen By Americans

2016/01/26

So this is a picture book published in New York in 1854 telling the story of an American traveller going to Russia and what he saw there. To make it more gloomy he called his book "A Knout and the Russians". Knout is a whip, a thing which used to raise the horses etc and also used to punish people in Russia, in public. Free and Happy Soviet People

According to the title this selection of the photos should show you free and happy Soviet people. They called it so, because it was first published somewhere in the middle 1960s in Russia, and a lot of people really were happy after their country was rebuilt after a devastating war and also pretty free, at least financially not having any house loans or anything like this. However it's up to you decide if those are propaganda photos or true life of Soviet people of that time.

Russian Acoustic Guitar Makers from Bobrovo Russia

It might be a surprising fact for you but in Russia there are still a few factories producing guitars. During Soviet times Russian people had to buy mostly all products locally made, so guitar manufacturers were blooming. Then, Russia opened its markets for foreign merchandise and many ex Soviet factories went bankrupt. Many think that Russian guitar makers were bankrupt too and not producing anything now - Chinese stuff is cheaper and often more well made. However it is not true and this is one of the examples of an old Soviet guitar maker that is still making acoustic guitars. Thanks to Russian photo blogger Andrei who went there and made photos we can see how the Russian guitar maker looks from inside.

Air Defense Museum Stationed on the Street Next to Regular Houses

2016/01/03

There is a small city called Balashikha near Moscow, and it has a unique air defense artillery museum that is mostly situated outdoors and is surrounded by regular houses that people live in - you can see one in the background here. So whenever people leave their apartments each day to go run their regular errands, they see the missiles everywhere. And it's all just a few kilometers from Moscow. Said, the photographer, has visited this place so let's see what he got there!

Man from Omsk builds a Lada Tank

2016/01/03

A car enthusiast from Samara, Russia, has built a tracked Lada from leftover car parts and scrap metal. He was inspired by a video he saw on TV about how the tracked vehicles easily go wherever they want, so he decided to build one for himself. He even named it similarly to how tanks are named in Russia. He called it T-21099. Let's see inside how he built it and what parts he took from where.  Looks cool, doesn't it?

Russian Empire Photos of the Late 19th Century

2016/01/03

A nice collection of late 19th century photos of the Russian Empire. It looks like a totally different world from how modern Russia looks now. At that time, Russia included such places as Helsinki and the whole of Finland, Warsaw and Poland. Much more area than now. Each picture has a caption but the captions are in French - though you can easily understand what they mean - like this on top says "Le Palais De Lamiraute" which translates into "Palace of Admiralty". Enjoy the view!
