GROZNY/MOSCOW, July 14 (RIA Novosti) – One policeman was killed and two others injured after hitting an unidentified explosive device in the Republic of Chechnya in Russia’s volatile North Caucasus Region, local police said on Sunday.
The bomb went off on Saturday morning when police were carrying our search operations in a forest south of the village of Roshni-Chu in Chechnya’s Urus-Martan district.
“As a result of the explosion, one policeman was killed at the scene of the blast and two others were hospitalized,” the police said.
Russia has fought two bloody civil wars in Chechnya since the Soviet Union’s dissolution in 1991. But, while insurgency remains a pressing issue in neighboring parts of the North Caucasus, fighting in Chechnya has vastly diminished under strong-arm leader Ramzan Kadyrov.
