Egyptian armed forces seize terrorist cell

2020/01/24

A terrorist group belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood* was uncovered and neutralized by the Egyptian security forces, as reported by the Ministry of Interior Affairs in Cairo. The terrorists were planning a series of terrorist attacks that were supposed to be launched on January 25th, on the anniversary of the 2011 protests that led to the overthrow of former president Hosni Mubarak.

The plan was to attack governmental targets, block the streets and generate riots in order to disseminate chaos. During the searches, security forces seized RPGs, Ak-47 assault rifles, handguns and revolvers, shotguns, ammunitions, improvised explosive devices (including nails to be used), knives, axes, machetes and masks. The various members of the group were in contact through Telegram and other chat rooms and they called themselves "the Jokers", as already done by Iraqi militants involved in attacks against security forces.

The Muslim Brotherhood* is a radical Islamist international movement born in Egypt in 1928 and currently outlawed in Russia, Syria, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Egypt. During the so-called "Arab Spring" the Obama administration strongly supported the MB and its political legitimation as part of a regime-change plan that was supposed to take place in Libya, Tunisia, Egypt and Syria.

In Egypt the MB-led government revealed a despotic face and only lasted for one year before being overthrown by a massive popular revolt supported by the army. Its leader, Mohamed Morsi, died in June 2019 while in detention, after facing several charges such as inciting the killing of opponents protesting outside his palace, espionage for foreign militant groups including Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran's Pasdaran, for escaping Wadi el-Natroun Prison during the 2011 revolution prior to his election as president, leaking classified documents to Qatar, in addition to insulting the judiciary.

In February 2003 the Russian Supreme Court banned the Muslim Brotherhood* with the accusation of being a terrorist organization that coordinated the formation of the so called Supreme Military Majlis ul-Shura of the United Forces of Mujahedeen of the Caucasus*, led by terrorists Ibn Al-Khattab and Shamil Basaev; an organisation that was responsible for multiple terrorist attacks against Russian forces and civilians.

2019-nCoV: Wuhan novel Coronavirus, it this the one?

2020/01/23

2019 -nCoV: Wuhan novel Coronavirus, it this the one?

China takes the lead in imposing travel restrictions, locking down the city of Wuhan while the rest of the world acts as a voyeur. Could this be catastrophic?

If you want information on the novel Coronavirus, don't bother going to the World Health Organization website, whose advice from a piece posted on January 10 reads:

"International traffic: no restrictions recommended"

This, while admitting in the same piece of advice to travellers that the level of risk and the means of communication of the virus remain unclear, and while admitting:

"WHO does not recommend any specific health measures for travellers. It is generally considered that entry screening offers little benefit, while requiring considerable resources".

This, while the WHO Emergency Committee appears unable to decide whether to issue a declaration of a public health emergency of international concern. Let us examine the WHO's previous record in such illnesses. Does anyone remember the Influenza A H1N1 a decade ago? The WHO sat back, told people to be vigilant and to avoid contact with those infected, then informed us as the virus spread from Phase 1 through to Phase 6. In other words, the virus became a global pandemic and the authorities waited until enough people were infected for the Pharma Lobby to swing into action and make billions on selling targeted anti-viral medication. The same approach followed with the West Africa EVD (Ebola Virus Disease) in 2013-2016.

The six phases to global pandemic

Let us take a quick look at the WHO's Pandemic Alert table for viruses

Phase 1: The virus is reported in animals but has not made a species jump to humans;

Phase 2: A virus circulating among animals has caused infection in humans;

Phase 3: A virus circulating among animals and humans has caused clusters of illness but there is no sustained human to human transmission able to create a threat to the community.

Phase 4: Human to human transmission at a level sufficient to cause community-level outbreaks

Phase 5: Human to human transmission spreading the virus to at least two countries in one WHO region, signalling that a pandemic is imminent.

Phase 6: Community-level outbreaks in at least one country outside this region. Global pandemic declared

Western media outlets have been reporting the reaction by the Chinese authorities, namely to lock down the city of Wuhan, where the beginning outbreak was identified in the South China Seafood Wholesale Market on December 31, as being draconian or authoritarian. I would report them as being plain common sense, lamenting the fact that this only took place three weeks after the outbreak was registered.

The scope of the virus

It has now spread from Wuhan to other regions of mainland PR China and there are cases in Thailand (4), Hong Kong (3), Macau (2) Japan, the Republic of Korea, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, and the USA (1 each) In total there are 648 cases and 17 deaths (a two per cent mortality rate).

However, "most" but not "all" cases are linked to the same seafood market in Wuhan, meaning that there is human-to-human transmission. With the number of new cases sky-rocketing from day to day, it would appear that we are already at Phase 4. Yet while people are unable to enter or leave Wuhan for other parts of China, they can board a plane and fly to London or several destinations in the USA.

Incubation and symptoms

There is an average ten-day delay between original infection and hospitalization/treatment. The virus takes 4 or 5 days to manifest symptoms and these develop over three to seven days. This means that the patients being reported as new cases appearing today were infected ten days ago, it means that those reported on December 31 were infected in mid-December.

The symptoms, depending on the patient, start with a runny nose, sore throat, coughing, fever, headache, developing into shortness of breath, difficulty in breathing, and in severe cases sepsis, resulting in septic shock, respiratory failure, multiple organ failure and death. Reports state that around 25% of the cases result in serious or critical illness, many of the patients revealing multi-lobal pulmonary infiltrates or pulmonary infiltration in both lungs, progressing 50 per cent in 24 hours. While this is not Influenza but a Coronavirus (which causes the common cold and gastro-enteritis), dark images begin to flash recalling Spanish Flu (1919-1920) which killed over 50 million people around the world, infecting 500 million.

A seafood market?

The first cases reported to the WHO by the Chinese health authorities identified the South China Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan City as being the source of the infection, and many of the original infections had a connection with this market. However, the vector (transmitting agent) is not necessarily seafood. The market is also a center for the illegal trafficking and selling of meat from wild animals - wolves, foxes, badgers, snakes, donkets, pigs, sheep, camels, civets (responsible for SARS), rabbits, poultry, bamboo rats, hedgehogs, various reptiles...and bats.

How much do we know?

Very little indeed. So far as far as projected infections and results are concerned, parallels have been drawn with other Coronaviruses which have developed human-to-human transmission, namely SARS-CoV (Severe Acure Respiratory Syndrome) which broke out in China in 2003 and has caused 774 deaths in 8.098 cases (a mortality rate of 9.5%) or MERS-CoV (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome), which broke out in Saudi Arabia in 2012 and has caused 858 deaths in 2.494 cases (34% mortality rate). The vector of SARS is the civet (a wild cat) and of MERS, the dromedary camel. Both acted as secondary vectors after being infected from bats, the original vector. Li Bin, the Vice-Minister of the Chinese National Health Committee, has declared that there is a risk that the 2019-nCoV can mutate. 2019-nCoV, while being distinct from SARS and MERS, is a betacoronavirus which has similarities to those found in bats and like SARS-CoV, it is a Beta-CoV lineage B virus. It is not clear whether the direct vector is bats or another animal which eats dead bats, such as the snake. The genomes isolated from 2019-nCov are BetaCoV/Wuhan/IVDC-HB-01/2019, BetaCoV/Wuhan/IVDC-HB-04/2020, BetaCoV/Wuhan/IVDC-HB-05/2019, BetaCoV/Wuhan/WIV04/2019, and BetaCoV/Wuhan/IPBCAMS-WH-01/2019. The RNA sequence is around 30 kbp in length and the NCBI genome ID is MN 908947.

Precautions

If this virus mutates into a type which causes gastro-enteritis, the best course of action is to wash the hands regularly in bleach and to wipe all surfaces touched in the home from arrival to removing clothing to dressing home clothes with a cloth soaked in bleach (door handles, keys, taps). If not, and if the virus continues to cause respiratory illness, the same procedure with soap and water or an alcohol based spray or gel helps to reduce the risk of infection. In either scenario, people should remember not to touch the face, something which we do involuntarily up to 6 times a minute (especially the mouth, nose and eyes), to avoid close contact (2 meters or 6 feet) in public spaces, and while coughing and sneezing, to cover the mouth and nose. It is also advisable to cook meat and eggs thoroughly.

Where do we stand?

As usual, the response from the global authorities is pitifully slow and always one step behind the virus. It is almost as if there is a desire for these outbreaks to develop into global pandemics, infecting millions of people and causing thousands of deaths, before the Pharma Lobby swings into action like the cowboy in the white hat in a John Wayne movie. Surely, if cities were locked down, air traffic were banned, and people quarantined inside their homes for the period of incubation (in this case a week and a half), such potentially catastrophic events could be nipped in the bud.

One of these days, one of these viruses is going to wipe out one third of humankind, as the Black Death did in the 14th century. Let us hope that 2019-nCoV is not the one. Or, given the timing of the outbreak just before hundreds of millions of people get ready to celebrate the Lunar New Year with their families, is this the plan?

Gun policies in the US: What's new?

2020/01/23

As you already know, gun policies are a very sensitive topic in the US, especially given the increasing number and frequency of shootings throughout the country.

For example, the end of 2019 brought a new change to how Walmart deals with the sale of guns and ammunition, following a shooting at one of its Texas stores that left 22 people dead. As such, you can no longer buy assault-style weapon or handgun bullets in Walmart.

On the other hand, the gun policies are bound to change, as the electoral race is quickly closing in, so to say. In fact, almost all of the Democrats that are part of the presidential elections have answered a survey meant to determine their standing on guns and gun policies in the US.

We're Going to Take Your AR-15!

If you're up to date with US media, then you should know that more and more people stand by the words of the former congressman of Texas, Beto O'Rourke. Following the previously mentioned Texas massacre, he emphasized his proposal to ban semi-automatic weapons and to engage in a mandatory buyback of them.

However, O'Rourke is now out of the presidential race - and his idea seems to have left at the same time. Still, voluntary buybacks were suggested by Buttigieg and Biden, making their gun policy plan look more favorable for the majority of the US citizens.

The Important Aspect

Even if all of the Democrats that take part in the presidential race have their little differences - which is completely normal - they all seem to support a single aspect of the gun policy.

Namely, all the Democrats support a ban on assault weapons, as well as universal background checks for those that want to purchase or already own a weapon. On top of that, sources suggest that at least one Democrat will make gun violence one of the central issues in their campaign.

Trump and Republican Lawmakers

When it comes to Trump and the Republican lawmakers, they didn't seem that interested in the discussions about any new gun policies. Trump, for example, expressed his support for the red flag law that allows the authorities to take away an individual's guns if there's a proof of a risk of violence - and that's pretty much it!

Measures like the ban on assault weapons and the universal background check weren't addressed, as the Republican lawmakers preferred to talk about connections between violent media, violence, and mental illness - connections that are rather questionable.

Even though for the moment, these changes only affect the Walmart shops and stores, they may soon come to other institutions as well. Why?

Well, first of all, the CEO of Walmart asked the Congress to pass stricter gun laws - even though such changes would reduce his firm's share of the ammo market down to 6-9%, from 20%.

As for the actual changes, handguns are now no longer sold in Alaska and the customers of Walmart were asked to stop carrying firearms openly - regardless of state and gun laws. Obviously, several Democrats, as well as politicians and celebrities, have praised Walmart's decision.

Therefore, it goes without saying that we may soon see such changes throughout the US.

The End of Loopholes

The boyfriend loophole or the Charleston loophole may soon vanish as well, given that the Democrat candidates are in the favor of their closing.

The aforementioned loopholes made it easier for people to get a gun. The Charleston loophole, for example, states that if a background check takes too long, you are allowed to obtain a gun without it being completed.

On the other hand, there have been some candidates that called for gun licensing as well - namely, one would require a license in order to purchase and own a firearm.

Gun Licensing

Booker, Buttigieg, Yang, and Warren all support a federal system based on gun licensing that would require owners of guns to get a license before buying and owning firearms.

Such a system would probably be based on the one available in Massachusetts. There, if you want to get a gun license, you'll have to undergo a background check, as well as a vetting process based on photos, interviews, a gun safety training course, and fingerprints.

Bennet and Biden, on the other hand, seem to be cautious toward the idea, as they didn't express their thoughts on it.

The Voice of the Candidates

Lastly, let's take a look at some of the new ideas that are on the gun policy market - and that we should keep an eye on.

  • Assault Weapons Ban - this suggestion has seen unanimous support from all of the Democrats running in the current election, but little to no interest from their Republican counterpart.
  • Red-Flag Laws - also have unanimous support from all Democrats. Such laws would allow the confiscation of guns from those people that are believed to put others or themselves at risk.
  • High-Capacity Magazine Ban - once again, unanimous support in this case as well.
  • Federal Anti-Gun-Trafficking Law - naturally, most people, not only politicians, are in favor of this particular law, as they have no issues with importations made in a legal manner.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that there have been some talks to increase the minimum age for gun purchases. Moreover, candidates support the increase of the waiting period, as well as a purchase limit of a single gun per month.

The AR Issue

As mentioned at the beginning of this article, some Democrats support buyback laws and would like to see the US stripped from AR-15s, so to say.

The buyback program would allow owners of assault-rifles to sell their guns to the government. Naturally, the main issue here is that the American people don't want to give up their - probably - most favorite gun!

As such, buybacks are seen as the most divisive gun policies at the moment - it is unknown whether they'll be applied or not.

Overall, it goes without saying that gun policies are on the verge of changing.

A lot of the Democrats support laws and changes that would change how guns work throughout the US. On the other hand, we must take Republicans - and Trump - into account as well.

It seems that the latter is trying to connect violent media - such as videogames - and mental illness with violence in general. This is a rather questionable approach as no Democrat candidate has shown support or interest in this topic.

Naturally, we are yet to see which of the above gun policies that are currently new on the market will stay for good in the US - and eventually change the country!

Acting as gods, Americans abolish UN and international security system

2020/01/22

Having killed Iranian general Qasem Soleimani, the United States has canceled all international laws and treaties, all personal rights of any person and entire nations. The existence of the United Nations Organization does not make any sense. It makes no sense to conclude and abide by treaties, at least with the Americans. The Americans act as if they are gods. Is God going to respond?

Inna Novikova, Pravda.Ru editor-in-chief, talked about it in an interview with Vyacheslav Polosin, doctor of philosophical sciences, candidate of political sciences, political scientist and Daria Mitina, secretary of the United Communist Party of Russia.

Consolidation of Iran and polarization in USA

"Mrs. Mitina, you say that Donald Trump has polarized the American society and consolidated the Iranian society even more. We could see it in the footage of Soleimani's funeral - there was a sea of people there."

Daria Mitina: Moreover, it is quite obvious that Qasem Soleimani, just like the Revolutionary Guards Corps, was not an authority for the Iranian society on the whole.

The political situation in Iran is very complicated now. We know that in recent months this republic has seen many anti-government protests, and many in the country were angered by the actions of the. And there was very great bitterness in certain environments against the activities of the Iran's Revolutionary Guards. Basically, the people took to the streets to protest against domestic policies of the Iranian administration on the whole.

Qasem Soleimani is a different story. Nevertheless, it backfired at him as well. His killing made millions of Iranians rise and take to the streets. Of course, there are many of those who grieve for General Soleimani. Most likely, most of the people took to the streets to express their protest against the United States and voluntarist behavior of the Americans.

"There are massive protests in the States too."

"Indeed, but I am far from the illusion to believe that all those people who rallied in New York and in Washington, treated Qasem Soleimani with respect one way or another. I think that most of them do not even know who Soleimani is.

For most of them, it was a common anti-Trump rally. Those people mostly represent electorate of the Democratic Party. They took advantage of the crisis to protest against arbitrary actions of the Trump administration.

Trump is to blame but he is not the only one

It would be wrong to believe that it is Trump and the Republican administration, who are to blame for the crisis. The matter is not about either specific individuals or political forces. Let's see what and how was happening in the United States during the past 20 years.

Both Democratic and Republican administrations behave equally. For example, the Clinton administration wiped out ф European state in the heart of Europe - Yugoslavia, they eliminated Milosevic, and many leaders of the Serbian national movement. The Bush administration destroyed Saddam Hussein and ripped Iraq into pieces.

In fact, the Americans appropriated, usurped the right of a higher international tribunal over entire nations.

Barack Obama was not warm and fuzzy either. Suffice it to recall the role of the United States in inciting inter-ethnic strife to set one ethnic group against another, to orchestrate the Arab Spring in many countries.

We all know how it all ended - look at Libya. In the United States, the elite stays united. They maintain an ideological unity of the two warring parties in America. This confrontation should not mislead anyone.

One can clearly see the aftermath of the bloody crimes of imperialism - this may be an obsolete term, but it is a very true one - but we can see that history repeats itself in Iran now. The Iranian general, an influential politician of a foreign state, was sacrificed to instantaneous interests.

It's not without reason that meticulous people found Trump's tweets from 2011, in which he was urging others not to let Barack Obama unleash World War III. He would call not to attack Iran for the sake of domestic political goals. Trump tweeted that in 2011, when Obama was also trying to gain political points in foreign.

As we all can now see, Trump is doing exactly the same thing. Less than a year is left before the election, he is facing impeachment and all other problems  are on the nose. Therefore, no matter how cynical it may seem, we see yet another confirmation to Carl von Clausewitz argument, (Carl Philipp Gottfried von Clausewitz was a Prussian general and military theorist who stressed the "moral" and political aspects of war), who said that war is a continuation of politics by other means."

Mr. Polosin, do you agree?

International security system has been canceled out

Vyacheslav Polosin: Unfortunately, all this is true, which is very sad. But you know, I would say that after the First World War there was an attempt made to create an international security system, the so-called international law. The League of Nations was established for this purpose, but the attempt failed quickly, and after World War II, the UN was organized.

This system had been functioning more or less efficiently for a long time. It did provide relative stability for years.

By killing Soleimani, Trump has completely abolished the international security system. Donald Trump has assumed the role of world master of destines. It was not someone completely unknown who did it, like, for example, the man, who shot a Russian ambassador dead in Turkey. It was an initiative of the Trump administration.
