Ultimatum set by protesters in Armenia nears end

2015/07/05

YEREVAN, July 6. /TASS/. An ultimatum issued by protesters against the increase in electricity tariffs in Armenia is due to expire on Monday.

The protesters on the Marshal Baghramyan Avenue, in downtown Yerevan, demand that the country’s authorities meet all their demands by 9 p.m. local time (1700GMT)

Otherwise, the demonstrators will start a "Step Forward" campaign, meaning that they will move their barricades closer to the presidential palace evey day.

The activists have been blocking Yerevan’s main street housing the residence of the head of state, the buildings of the parliament, the Constitutional Court and also embassies of China, Syria and the UK for two weeks already.

They have set up a barricade of garbage bins and refuse to provide access to the traffic way.

The key demands are that the authorities cancel the decision on the hike in electricity prices and also punish the police officers who exceeded their authority during the dispersal of the march on June 23.

In comments to the statement of the planned protesters’ actions, the city police noted that they would not allow this step and will consider it as an "artificial confrontation" with law enforcers.

Meanwhile, the deputy chief of Yerevan police, Col. Valery Osipyan, said the position of the law enforcers will be defined starting from Monday judging from the circumstances.
