Russia’s Novosyolov brothers win 1st gold in Universiade springboard diving

SEOUL, July 5. /TASS/. The Russian athletes Yevgeny and Vyacheslav Novosyolov have won the national term’s first gold medal in the 3-meter springboard synchronous diving with 394.50 points at the 2015 Summer Universiade in the South Korean city of Gwangju.

The gold is the tenth medal won by the Russian national team at the Universiade.

On the first competition day on Saturday, the Russian athletes won 5 silver and 4 bronze medals.

According to the official website of the International University Sports Federation (FISU), the Summer Universiade is an international sporting and cultural festival which is staged every two years in a different city. The name of the international sports event is a combination of two words, which are ‘University’ and ‘Olympiad.’

It is only second to the Olympic Games. The Summer Universiade consists of 10 compulsory sports with 13 compulsory disciplines and up to 3 optional sports chosen by the host country.

The first Summer Universiade was held in Italy’s Turin in 1959 and the most recent in 2013 in the Russian city of Kazan, where the hosting team finished in the first place of the overall medals standings, boasting a total of 292 medals (156 gold, 74 silver and 62 bronze) and leaving behind the rest of 161 nations participating in the two-week global sports event.
