MOSCOW, July 3. /TASS/. EU can play a more active role in the settlement of the crisis in Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a meeting with his Luxembourg’s counterpart Jean Asselbourn on Friday.
"We are happy to see you in Moscow, and we appreciate that you decided to visit Russia on the third day of Luxembourg’s presidency in the Council of the European Union," Lavrov said, reminding that the country presides in the EU Council from 1 July until 31 December 2015. "I think that it reflects the understanding that our relations are developing not quite normally, and this is a possibility to analyze the situation," the Russian foreign minister noted.
Lavrov added that Moscow values Luxembourg’s balanced position on Russia-EU cooperation. "Of course, we are ready to discuss different situations," Lavrov said at a meeting with Luxembourg’s Foreign Minister Jean Asselbourn. "Thy include the Middle East, terrorist threat, the situation with Ukrainian settlement, where, we are confident, the European Union can play a more active and constructive role," he noted.
Russia and EU have certain disagreements about settlement of the Ukrainian crisis, but are confident that they can reach consensus on this issue, Asselbourn said.
"Today we will discuss the situation around the Ukrainian crisis," the Luxembourgian dilpomat said. "Despite the fact that Russia and EU have certain differences on the crisis settlement, implementation of the Minsk accords, we have political will and we are confident that we can reach an agreement and reach peace and disarmament in Ukraine, establish a political dialogue," he added.
