NOVO-OGARYOVO, June 17. /TASS/. Russia is firmly against legalization of light drugs and believes that this attitude should be advanced more actively at all international discussion sites, President Vladimir Putin said at a meeting of the State Council’s Presidium on Wednesday.
"We are certainly against such approaches (by a number of countries towards legalization) and this point of view should be advanced more actively at all international sties," Putin said. "A great deal depends on systematic exchanges of information and experience. If necessary, joint operative measures must be taken and awareness promotion activities arranged for."
"The federal drug control service FSKN, acting in cooperation with international organizations should establish pro-active cooperation in the field of resistance to drug addiction and trafficking. All major international sites and organizations, first and foremost, the United Nations, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the BRICS group and the CSTO should be used for this purpose," Putin said.
Next spring the UN General Assembly will meet in special session devoted to the problem of narcotic drugs.
"It is necessary to formulate a consolidated position. It is important to focus the world community’s efforts on the elimination of global centres of heroin and cocaine production and to promote the emergence of conditions for the socio-economic development of countries whose poverty-stricken citizens indulge in criminal pursuits," Putin said.
