No talk of holding 2019 European Games in Russia — sports minister

BAKU, June 11. /TASS/. The issue of holding the second edition of the European Games in 2019 in Russia has not been raised, Russia’s Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko told a TASS correspondent on Thursday.

The multi-sport event was originally planned to be held in the Netherlands. However, on Wednesday, the National Olympic Committee announced that the Netherlands pulled out of hosting the Games.

"I can say that we are fully engaged with the competitions up to 2020," Mutko said. "It is of utmost importance for us now to focus on the performance at the Games," he said.

Russia’s sports minister arrived in Azerbaijan’s capital Baku on Thursday to talk to Russian athletes participating in the European Games. Mutko is scheduled to meet with his counterparts from other countries and attend an opening ceremony of the event on Friday.

Baku has the honor to host the first European Games on June 12-28.

Athletes will compete for 253 sets of medals in 30 sports disciplines. Competitions in 11 sports - archery, athletics, boxing, beach volleyball, wrestling, cycling, shooting, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo and triathlon - will enjoy the status of qualifies ahead of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
