MOSCOW, May 20. /TASS/. The Federation Council, the upper house of Russia’s parliament, approved a bill on Wednesday regulating the activity of foreign or international non-governmental organizations.
The bill was approved by the State Duma, the lower house of Russia’s parliament, on Tuesday.
The law recognizes as "undesirable" an organization that "poses a threat to the fundamentals of the constitutional order of Russia, the country’s defense capability and the state’s security."
The law authorizes the Prosecutor General’s Office to decide on recognizing an organization as undesirable upon approval from the Interior Ministry of Russia.
Non-profit organizations with this status will not be allowed to carry out operations with monetary funds or property through financial structures.
The law imposes a ban on the activity of an undesirable organization’s structural units in Russia and the dissemination of its information materials. The breach of this rule will entail a prison term of up to 6 years.
