CAIRO, April 22. /TASS/. Two policemen have been killed after being shot by unidentified gunmen, Al Youm Al Saabi news portal said on Tuesday.
The incident took place on Tuesday evening in the El-Zeitoun district in Cairo’s north-east, the portal said.
According to reports, two armed men on a motorcycle opened fire on the policemen who were on their way to work. One of the victims of the attack is Colonel Wael Tahoon, former head of police criminal investigation in the El Matariya district, where many violent clashes between law enforcers and Muslim Brotherhood supporters took place. In 2013, the group was banned in Egypt.
Eyewitnesses said a loud explosion was heard at the time of the attack on the policemen.
On Tuesday, a Cairo court sentenced former Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi to 20 years in jail. Morsi was convicted of ordering the arrest and torture of protesters in clashes outside the presidential palace in December 2012.
Law enforcement agencies do not rule out that the attack was revenge for the verdict.
